Illustration Friday: Diary

Art Journal July 9, 2010
(graphite, colored pencils and pen - illustration friday)

Well. I am well aware that the topic itself was "Diary", and I have toyed with several ideas in connection with it, but in the end I am just posting a recent page of my everyday Art Journal (presently a Moleskine). It was created on the way to my in-laws in the car, just for fun and to kill the time. Kinda zombie woman or what.

Intermezzo

I have gotten emails on 3 new comments of this blog but for the life of me I do not understand where they are or where they have disappeared in the blog (i.e. why aren't they showing up as usual, among the comments below). I do not moderate comments, etc. It might just be a short-term blogger melt down, however, I wanted to let you know that it was not me, I swear.

It is annoying and hasn't happened so far.

UPDATE (a day later): the blog still does not show the new comments. I apologize - but no clue what to do.

UPDATE 2: it seems to me blogger en bloc is experiencing this problem (not just me). A whole lot of blogs have the same problem. I reported it (there is a whole section now as well as a separate form for this concrete issue). We'll see.

UPDATE 3: it is about noon, July 7, and it seems to me blogger at last recovered.***

In Context

In Context
(pencil drawing and collage with digital background)

I am not very happy with the result: the statement is weak and pretty commonplace-y. I have had a relatively large pencil drawing (the person in the roots) for months and been waiting for the Real Thought to finish the trunk. Well, I just lost my patience and finished it a couple of hours ago. The digital background helped it a bit, and who knows, it might end up as a totally different image in the future...

A bit fucked up, but I did not have time and energy to correct it.

The illustration was made with the help of two tutorials.

Wanted to make a photorealistic colorado beetle (it is coming some time) with colored pencils (halfly done), but meanwhile I got entangled with this and felt like finishing it. All together approx. 15-18 8-10 hours. I am falling in love with painting in Photoshop, I guess. Never thought it would happen, until I discovered some really cool techniques. (As it happens, the whole adventure started with a certain tut.)

Under the drawing there are fragments of the three books which have formed me all my life; without them I would not be what I am now. As a matter of fact, I would not be at all. But it is a long story.

The quoted texts are from A kitömött hattyú by Péter Esterházy, Shakespeare Our Contemporary by Jan Kott and Iskola a határon by Géza Ottlik.

...till death do us apart...

...till death do us apart...
(pencil drawing and collage on an accounting sheet)

The story is similar to my Face-off. I have found an old ink jet print of a 19th century photograph in one of my old folders. It is approximately twice as big as the original picture, and was printed on cardstock. I seem to be obsessed with spilling liguid as this one has gotten some too. And the spots were so beautiful and discolored that I had to integrate them into the final drawing.

I evidently cannot get rid of my flying stuff, but I really do not mind it...

Appr. 8" x 16".

Face-off

Face-off
(pencil drawing, copied electronically and digital background added)

Has a history. I needed a devious older face for a work, and I drew one. But I was not sure how I was going to use it, so I copied it several times on several sheets of paper to experiment. This was a left over. I evidently spilled different kinds of liquid onto it several times, got a tape spot, etc. (We are talking about years.) I found it a couple of days ago in an old folder of mine, and fell in love with its surprise: the naturally tattered, shabby, grungy look. So I manipulated a bit more in Photoshop and kind of liked the result.
